In both stories, Accident, Mass. Ave by Jill McDonough and The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe, the main characters both have issues with other people and choose to deal with them in different ways. In Accident, Mass. Ave the author gets into a car accident and ends up reconciling with the woman that hit her car. In The Cask of Amontillado the main character, Montresor has an issue with Fortunato and ends up trapping him and leaving him to die.

In Accident, Mass. Ave the author is hit by another driver. She immediately gets out of her car and starts screaming at the driver that hit her because it was “Boston” and “that(s) the thing to do” (McDonough).  Without even looking at the car or the other driver, the author is yelling and flailing her arms. When the author turned to look at the damage to her car there was none, the other driver had just hit her tire. She looked at her car and the other driver car and saw no damage. She asked the other driver if she was okay and she was and then the other driver started crying. The author embraced the other driver and comforted her and said, “We were scared, weren’t we?” (McDonough). With all the emotions going on in the authors head, she didn’t even check the car before she started yelling.

In The Cask of Amontillado the main character, Montresor, is mad at Fortunato. He decides to get his revenge by leading him into the catacombs and trapping him in there. Montresor gets Fortunato drunk and leads him to the back of the catacombs and straps him to something, so he is stuck in a niche. Montresor starts to build a wall that traps Fortunato. He completely seals him off and leaves Fortunato screaming to die. Montresor let his anger get the best of him. Although at one point Montresor “hesitated”… “but the thought if an instant reassured” (Poe) him. In both stories, the main characters deal with a conflict with another person in a very different way.
