McDonough and Poe

The poem "Accident, Mass. Ave" by Jill McDonough takes a small moment after a car accident and her instant reaction. This poem made me think about the automatic aggression that people feel right after they have been in a car accident. She describes how the moment is so quick and how so many thoughts just rush through your mind. I feel like everyone's initially reaction is to be mad weather it is at themselves if they caused the accident or at the other person. The poem in a way made me laugh because it is human nature to get worked up about an accident and to get angry when nobody ever intends on getting into a car accident. The lines at the end of the poem, " We were scared, weren't we? and she nodded and we laughed." is what stood out to me the most. After the whole poem talks about the two of them getting angry and cursing at each other when they both cooled down and were just present in the moment they realized that they were both just scared and didn't know what to do and anger was the first reaction to the situation to cover up being scared. This urge of always wanting revenge against someone who does you wrong is also a clear theme in Edgar Allan Poe's work "The Cask of Amontillado". Montressor was insulted by Fortunato and seeks revenge. Even though they are friends Montressor doesn't like that his friend insulted him and again like human nature his initial reaction to seek complete revenge. In the end of both poems, the main people realize that seeking revenge and getting angry is only a temporary feeling and that really if you took a step back from the situation it is just a quick moment of anger that will fade. This made me think about people in real life and how everybody feels the need to get back at someone who has done them wrong but really it is a just a waste of energy when you could just come to terms with the person.
