McDonough and Poe
After reading the poem “Accident Mass. Ave” by McDonough and
the story “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Alan Poe, I noticed that both in
their own way transmit the idea which us humans have this dark and very emotional
side of us that leads us to wrong actions towards someone else. In the poem by McDonough,
when the lady technically caused the accident by backing into the man’s car causing
the man to automatically get out of the car mad and yelling to the lady without
even looking to his car first, demonstrates how the man emotionally rushed into
a conclusion which at the end, turned out to regret and realize how unnecessary
the whole drama was.
In addition, the story “The Cask of Amontillado” by Poe, shows
Montresor relying on his emotions towards Fortunato which makes him decide to
act in a wrong way only to get revenge because Montresor claims to be insulted
and injured by Fortunato repeatedly. I believe that everyone must have thought
in doing the wrong, even though, knowing it is wrong because instead of caring
for others, it is complicated to deny our emotions which makes us only care and
notice the mistakes and the wrong things other people cause to us.
In the poem, I noticed that both sides realized that there
was no need for the yelling and the drama since the accident did not cause any damage
to their cars. On the other hand, in the story, I feel like Montresor was very
certain of his action with no regret, after all, he must have planned very well
on how to bury a man alive and have no one to discover about it.
