McDonough and Poe

The stories Accident Mass. Ave and Cask of Amontillado show two extreme reactions to two different situations. While both characters have different situations, they both have similar emotions that stem from the same place. Or do they?

Accident Mass Ave. illustrates how humans often react quickly to situations without thinking things through. The narrator was hit by another car and their first instincts were to get out of their cars and curse each other out. While this is a normal to reaction we often see in these kinds of  situations, this poem shows that this particular reaction sometimes isn’t needed at all. The author included lines 10-14 to shed light on how as humans, we see how others react in situations and we think that reaction is the standard when in fact it is not. After noticing theres no damage to either of their cars, they realized how pointless it was to explode at each other to begin with. It’s also worth taking not of how neither one of them cared about if the other was hurt, only about the cars. Which could show that we are instinctively materialistic people.

In The Cask of Amontillado, Montresor seems to be harboring vengeful feelings against Fortunato because of injuries he inflicted on him, but these injuries are never disclosed. Unlike Accident Mass Ave. there is no real reason why the main character is upset, which leads us to believe that he is delusional. Fortunato did not show any resentment towards him and was genuinely friendly. In this story Montresor also does not explode like the narrator in the first story. He strategized his revenge and instead of being direct and angry towards Fortunato right away, he pretends to like him to get close to him before he strikes. At the end when Fortunato does not reply back, it is now when Montresor starts he feel sick to his stomach and is realizing what he is actually doing to him. This makes him hesitate to finish the job. At this point, the author wants us to see that revenge seems fun at first but when you’re actually doing it it’s not as exciting when you realize you’re actually hurting someone.
