Frankenstein - Mary Shelley
After reading “Frankenstein” written by Mary Shelley, I found
myself surprised because I have always had the idea that the "monster" was responsible
for destruction and doing bad things plus I also thought he was called Frankenstein. But soon, I realized that the monster’s name was not Frankenstein, and also, the monster
had emotions and feelings just like us humans have. Very often, humans are responsible for
acting based on their emotions and feelings, so in the story, I can connect this same idea to understand the monster’s reason for acting the way he does.
The story makes me think about the saying “Never judge a
book by its cover” because after Frankenstein created the monster, his reaction
towards him says a lot about that. Frankenstein immediately judged his creation by the
way it looked, not even given a chance to get to know the “monster”, simply jumped to the conclusion that the "monster" is a real monster because it looks ugly. Further, realizing
how the monster feels, many things happened with him which certainly
could have traumatized and impacted his life negatively. I can almost relate
their relationship to a father-son relationship, in which the creator is responsible for taking care of his creation just like a father does to his son, although, none of it happens. The theme of abortion comes to my mind
because the "monster" is left alone to live in the world as if Frankenstein has
no connection at all to him. The "monster" has to learn by himself how to live life, deal with everything being so new and different from himself and Frankenstein should have been there for him since
the beginning to guide and teach the “monster” before even thinking about
leaving him alone, it is about taking responsibility for his actions.
As we know, this is not what happens so the “monster” does not know what to do and I believe to be unfair to blame him for becoming an actual monster because the reason why everything happened the way it did leads way back to how everything started, and how he was treated by his creator Frankenstein.
