Frankenstein 1
After reading Frankenstein in high school, I did not fully appreciate the story enough or completely understand the entire plot. Now that we are reading it for this class, I am able to notice things about the story that I didn’t acknowledge before. In the first half of Frankenstein, we are introduced to many characters and see how they relate to each other as the plot develops.
In the beginning, Mary Shelley introduces the reader to Robert Walton. He longs for knowledge about nature and sets out on a journey to the North Pole to discover a northern passage and learn about magnetism. On his journey, Walton meets a man named Victor Frankenstein and encourages him to join them on his ship. Frankenstein warns Walton about his experience with chasing knowledge and giving into his determination. You can see the connection between Walton and Frankenstein because they both desired knowledge about something greater than themselves and do not stop even when it appears dangerous.
Victor Frankenstein begins to tell his story about his life and ambition. He begins by describing his perfect family growing up and introduces us to those characters. When Victor’s mother dies, he decided that he wanted to learn more about the laws and science of nature and leaves his family to study. He learns about the mysteries of creation and is warned by a teacher of his; however, ignores the warning and continues learning and planning. He isolated himself from everyone and decided to create his own being. Successfully creating a life, Victor is terrified by the appearance of his creature and runs away from it. To me, that is the most important detail of the story. He runs away from his own creation and abandons it. As the story progresses, the reader finds out that the monster has feelings and was upset that his “father” left him. Victor running away from the monster caused him to be responsible for the death of two innocent people, however, he did not confess his doings. The monster eventually fids Victor again and explains to him how he feels and what he has been doing. The monster helping the family truly reveals that it has emotions and is not just a creature. The monster watches them and realizes that he is alone because Victor abandoned him and he becomes very upset.
