Date & Time
In the first part of the Date & Time, Kaye talks about what it was like growing up for him. He remembers growing up when his parents stopped speaking Japanese to him. That was his first language and as a little kid his parents spoke Japanese to him and when they stopped he truly wondered why. He mentions how he misses and somewhat longs for his family to still speak in their mother language. He doesn’t understand how one day a family can just stop speaking in their mother language and begin to alter what they say to just english. My biggest takeaways are from the Beginning, Middle, & End Chapter because the author pulls from all different parts of his life. This made me think about the fact that when you meet someone the stories you tell them don’t have to be in chronological order. The stories that make up a person are from all different parts of their life. In the Camaro short story, he talks about his thoughts that he has while at a Hertz Rental place. While on another hand, in Repetition, he explains to the reader that his mom always told him that when you repeat something it loses its importance. He talks about in life that when you do something so much that in a way it loses its importance. In some aspects I agree that when you drive the same roads each day the ride becomes more ingrained and you don’t have to think about it anymore. When he talks about his stutter he explains that he overcome that struggle by breaking down the words. When you break something down and take the time to focus on each part it becomes more important. He talks about how he developed his stutter after his parents got divorced. He remembers the clear moment when his parents got divorced and he was only seven years old. They sent him to his neighbors house prior to their last argument. This may not seem that important in the moment but for him this moment was very important and very clear in his mind.
