Date & Time Analysis
Date & Time is a story filled with poetry about the author, Phil Kaye. It is quite a unique story because of the way he set up the timeline. Usually stories have a beginning, middle, and end. But not this one. Instead, his stories are portrayed as the end, the beginning, and ends with the middle. One of my favorite quotes from this poetry is when he says, "every great story has a beginning, middle, and end, not necessarily in that order, we are all great stories though not all written as chapter books". This really spoke out to me because I do believe that we all have these beautiful lives and stories to share but you may not think that every part of the book is the best part. In the beginning(middle) it shows Phil's young age of when he was a child. Within this chapter you will be thrown into a time when he was with his childhood best friend. "Before the Internet" is also one of my favorite parts. It takes you back to when you'd play these fun games with your best friend all day, and eventually you would run out of games so you make one up. The importance of memories is also brought up in "Apparition" when Kaye rememberers Jonathan, his old friend, the time before he could actually choose his own friends. He wrote about all the times they would laugh and play and all the fun times they would have together. He then continued to write about the time when Jonathan got bullied in third grade about his weight. Soon after that it transitioned to middle school. People have changed, especially Jonathan. His old childhood friend had turned into his own bully. Many can relate to this part of the story and I definitely know that I can. I beleive that both good and bad memories can be shared with one person. But I like to think that I can look past the bad memories and reminisce about the good ones. Even writing this right now hurts because the same situation just recently happened to me and all I could wonder is why? Why would you leave me? How could you just throw away all those years of our lives? But the question I leave myself wondering is, is she happy? I like to think that Kaye was wondering the same things. But I guess that's life.
