Date and Time by Phil Kaye

The author of the book is Phil Kaye which tells stories of his life in his own inimitable style throughout the book, and perhaps a lot of people relate to him because they have been through the same situations. Phil Kaye is a fan of passing time, and for this reason time is precious so it is up to you to stand up and go create your own story out there. Kaye mentions that every story has a beginning, middle, and an end but they are not necessarily in that order. This phrase is repeated many times during the book, and it caught my attention because it does not matter what order you tell your story, if it starts from the end or if you have 40 years old, everything that happens in your life is unique. In the story “Camaro”, Kaye mentions the time he had a crush on a girl from school but he never said anything, and this one day she simply left the school and never returned. We wait life to give us opportunities but, we forget that life itself already is one. It makes me feel that only time can take them away from you, these moments that you are living now will not last forever so, own it and go live life in your own way, not letting things that you want to do or say for later because time can take that away from you.

Kaye takes us on his journey through his difficulties growing up, later on his adolescence, and finally his adulthood. Coming from a broken home, and having to deal with parents split up must have not been easy for him. Many people have faced the same situation so when they read his story, it makes them feel better because the way he expresses his point of view, the reader gets caught up in the beauty of his poetry and the way he tells his story. Date and time is a book which has a balance between happiness and frustration but, it lets us live again in our happiest moments.

     Phil Kaye’s poem " Date and Time " is a well-written poetry book filled with stories from his life, varying from his childhood to his adult life. Through these collections of poems in which Phil Kaye organizes by “Beginning, Middle and End” however he prefaces that it would not necessarily be in that order. Kaye exposes the readers to his various life experiences that not only express a range of emotions from the poet but evokes similar emotions from the reader as well.      The collections of poems each have their own story mixed with a unique structure and a title that illustrates each story told. iExamen 1

  Caitlin Dempsey EN-101-17 iExamen 1 September 27, 2020 I always have my phone on me, but I never realized how much I go on it. As much as I hate to admit it, I am one of those people who checks their phone first thing in the morning and right as they go to sleep. I woke up on Saturday morning and grabbed my phone to check the time. I then looked at my text messages, snapchats, and other social media accounts to see what I “missed” while I was asleep. I then continued my morning routine and went to get my coffee to wake up. I usually am not a morning person, so I don’t answer any texts or snapchats and remain relatively quiet until my “brain wakes up” after my coffee.   This iExamine was an interesting concept for someone who doesn’t think much of what they’re saying, but for me it wasn’t anything new. My life has already thought me through the lesson of watching what you say and that words have weight. The only way for me to truly learn in life is to make mistakes so of course in the past I’ve said things that hurt peoples feelings or said something that I thought was nice but it actually hurt someone. When I hurt someone by what I said it was never my intentions so that made me really cautious of everything I said. I try to learn my lesson from these mistakes so I can become a better person.  Learning a lesson is great but it means nothing if you don’t implement what you learned into your daily life so it’s definitely something that’s on my radar everyday and this assignment felt familiar.
